Disaster recovery in the business and technology industries is the process of creating a disaster recovery plan that ensures critical business processes and applications are operational quickly after a disaster occurs. Disaster recovery planning is a discipline that should become part of an organization's DNA since disaster can and eventually do happen. A business disaster recovery plan can also be called business continuity disaster recovery planning and the terms are used interchangibly. Disaster recovery software can be used to assist in the development of DR plans as they help identify mission critical applications, prioritize which processes and systems need to be recovered first, etc.

Recovery is often assisted using a backup of system data and applications and can be done onsite or offsite at a hosted facility. Backup software can automate data backup as well as server backup. Recently, online backup services have emerged offering affordable monthly fee structures.
